Antique Spoon Hangers

Christmas 2009

As much as I wish I was an incredibly neat and tidy cook and baker, I’m just not.

I have this terrible tendency to lean on the edge of the counter just after I’ve spilled maple syrup there. Oftentimes when I can fruit, I end up with an inordinate amount of fruit juice on my hands and forearms. Sometimes, I add flour to my mixing bowl, and a cloud of flour splashes back out at me and the counter.

Clearly, I am one of those people who needs to wear an apron in the kitchen.

For the past few months, I’ve been keeping my aprons in the top cabinet of our new pantries because I couldn’t decide where else to put them. This caused a problem for two reasons:

1. I am too short to comfortably reach anything in those top cabinets without a step stool.

2. More often than not, I forgot to put on an apron until it was too late.

{For the record, I am only 5’0″. Let the short jokes commence.}

This weekend, I finally got fed up enough with the situation to find a new home for the aprons. Enter a set of antique silver spoons, turned into kitchen hooks.

I’ve had this idea for awhile, but went back and forth for weeks on whether or not I would like the final look. As it turns out, we should have done this long ago, because I absolutely love it!

What You’ll Need:

Small nails {1 per spoon}
Drill with bits that are suitable for use on metal
Tape measurer
Pencil
Hammer
Spoons

I found this mismatched set at an antique store for $3. You could also check out garage sales or ask family members if they have any old flatware they aren’t using anymore.

How-To:

Carefully drill a 1/8″ hole in the center of the flat end of the spoon. We chose to put our hole about 1/4″ inch from the end.

Using the tape measurer, decide on the spacing you’d like between each spoon “hook” and mark where the nail for each spoon should go with the pencil.

Carefully bend the spoons to the angle you want. As you can see below, I chose to have them all curved slightly differently for some more variety. Just don’t bend the spoon too much at the narrowest part…I snapped a spoon in half that way!

Aprons-Spoons.jpg

Slide a nail through the drilled hole in one spoon. Center the tip of the nail over your pencil marking and hammer in the nail until the spoon lays nearly flat on the wall. Repeat with remaining spoons and admire your work.

I wouldn’t recommend hanging anything much heavier than an apron or potholders on these hooks. Like I said, too much tension on the narrowest part of the spoon can make it snap!

    That is such a cute idea! It looks awesome. I wish I had a space in my kitchen for something like that. I have my aprons in an easy to reach drawer, but out of sight out of mind…I never remember to put them on!

    Love this idea! My apron sits on the top shelf of our make-shift pantry area, where it is easily reached. I don’t always use it though I know I should :-)

      Hmm…maybe you could put strong magnets on the back of the spoons, and hang them on the side of the refrigerator?

      • September 27, 2011 at 2:34 pm #

        The fridge won’t quite work, it has a cart next to it. But you’ve given me an idea that just might work…I’ll report back if I can make it happen!

    You are a genius.
    And you make me wish I had my own house.

      You could nail them to a board instead of the wall, and use adhesive strips to put it on the wall, maybe?

    AHHHH! I’m keeping my excitment to myself because if I give a HINT of this post to my hubby right now he’s going to roll his eyes as I am into everything retro and vintage. I so want to pay hommage to (aka-swipe) this idea in the near future! Maybe he won’t notice. ;-)

      Yes, the “Savvy Eats” apron you gave me gets the center spoon :)

    I cannot express how cute this idea is nor how adorable you look in that apron!! I don’t have my own house yet, but this is something I would definitely want to do.

    I think cooking/baking is just a messy thing lol and I really need to remember to wear my apron or just not care that I get food on my current outfit. ;-)

    This is such a creative and cute idea! I too should be using an apron in the kitchen, I ALWAYS have food on my shirt after cooking – I have yet to invest in an apron for some reason though.. ha!
