Welcome to the Camp Blogaway Awards, Part 3! In case you missed Parts 1&2…
- Most Inspiring Session: Building a Bona Fide Community with Foodblogga and 5-Second Rule
- Most Encouraging Session: Balancing the Pressures of Blogging with RecipeGirl, Savor the Thyme, and SippitySup.

Our next award goes to the session that I’m sure I’ve never seen at another blogging conference, A Discussion with Tastespotting. Greg of Sippity Sup interviewed Tastespotting’s founder, Sarah, using camper-submitted questions.
It was so enlightening to hear what makes a photo “Tastespotting-worthy.”
Want to up your odds of your photo getting accepted?
- Make sure your photo is well-lit, well-composed and in-focus.
- Do not submit images that include watermarks.
- Keep people out of your images whenever possible. The site is about the food, not the people enjoying or making it.
- Add categories, tags and descriptions where prompted.
- Your camera doesn’t matter. How you use it does.
- While most reviews are done in the early morning or evening, it really doesn’t matter what time of day you submit your photos.
- Add some variety to your photo. Sarah wants the front page to look as gorgeous at possible, so she wants a wide range of colors, textures and subjects to feature in the coveted “page 1″ spots.
While Sarah usually knows within a few seconds whether the photo is getting approved or declined, she will click over to read the posts attached to the ‘on-the-fence’ photos. If the rest of the post is unique or intriguing, the photo is more likely to be approved.
I loved having the unique opportunity to hear about Tastespotting from Sarah herself!
What are your best food photography tips? Do you stage your photos in some way, or use a simple backdrop? I’m still trying to figure out what works best for me!
Huge thanks to Garlic Gold for sponsoring a portion of my travel to Camp Blogaway!
