Confessions of Savvy Eats

by Julie @savvyeats on January 14, 2010

I have some confessions to make. A la Lindsey, I’m going to share them with you tonight!

Confession #1: Project Strength

I completely fell off the “Project Strength” bandwagon. Seriously. I’ve hardly run at all in the past two months, which is not good for someone running her first half marathon in two months. And while my push-ups and ab works have been up to snuff, my strength training has fallen by the wayside a bit.

Rather than beating myself up about it, I’ve decided that I am going to look at this as a chance to start anew.

And so, today I re-started Project Strength. Since the tape measurer is still in a box somewhere, and the camera is in Wisconsin (while I am in New York), I’m just going to use my most recent stats as the “before” for the new Project Strength. Honestly, I don’t think my body has changed that much yet anyways.

In case you haven’t heard of Project Strength, here are my goals:

  1. Strength train 3-4 times a week
  2. Pilates or yoga 3 times a week
  3. Cardio 3 times a week (this used to be 2 times a week, but I’ve got some running and biking to do, people!

I have so many motivations for doing Project Strength:

  • My upcoming half marathon
  • Training for our honeymoon
  • Wanting to look toned in my wedding dress
  • Wanting to feel strong and confident
  • Wanting to become a better ‘yogi’

So while this is an intense schedule, I think I can do it this time! For real. Readers, hold me to this, okay?

Today, I went for an amazing run through Cornell’s campus and the rest of Ithaca. I made a wrong turn somewhere in there, so I have no idea how far I ran. I was gone for about an hour, though, so I’m going to guess I went further than my planned four miles!

Speaking of which, hills in Ithaca are INTENSE. Crazy steep, and crazy long. My legs can already feel today’s run!

Also, I’m going to take my first spinning class next week! Madison isn’t exactly bike-able right now, so I figure that spinning is the next-best-thing for Italy training!

Confession #2: Being a vegetarian

Back in November, I decided that I would be mostly-vegetarian. I did this not only for my health, but also for the environment.

I typically have no problem avoiding meat. I’ve started baking with flax eggs, drinking almond milk more than I do cow’s milk, and eating less cheese. But I won’t give up my Greek yogurt, ice cream, or occasional cheese.

And honestly? There have been some meat dishes I’ve really been wanting to order/make lately. And I realized yesterday that the only reason I don’t make/order these dishes is because I feel like I can’t since I said on the blog that I would be mostly-vegetarian. And that is not a good reason to not eat something I want.

So confession #2 is this: I have been eating vegetarian only about 97% of the time. I will still cook the occasional meat dish. But when I do, I will only use organic, local meat. And it will be only when I really want it. I think that’s fair, don’t you?

So there you have my two big confessions. Any comments? Or confessions of your own you want to share?

Phew! I have been awful at Project strength but after having trouble hoisting my suitcase into the overhead on Tuesday I am recommitted. I want to be able to stow my own suitcase without a man’s help darnit!

To me, eating mostly vegetarian means just that MOSTLY. I think if 97% of your meals are vegetarian you’re doing great especially if you’re choosing high quality, organic, local meat the 3% of the time you do choose to make a meat dish.

I too have fallen off my usual work out routine. :( Between the holidays, traveling, stress/hell-week and then getting sick, UGH! I just want to get healthy (asthma still is a beotch) so I can workout again!

Another confession? I’ve been re-thinking the whole vegan thing. I’m not sure if all aspects of a vegan diet ALL the time are the best for me. Thinking about bringing back eggs and fish occasionally. Not sure. Plus – I really, really still miss everything non-vegan. Even though dairy hurts me stomach, I miss the occasional fro-yo. I very rarely ate meat, but I’ve found myself craving salmon, steak, and more. Interesting.

Really? I had no idea you were re-thinking being vegan. I think whatever you decide is best for your body is what you should eat.

Yeah I think its good not to put a label on yourself, if you want meat once in a blue mood, go for it!

Thank you for confessing! I think it’s so important to show that we all get off track sometimes but it’s not the end of the world. :)

Organic and local meat is the best way to go if you are going to eat meat. The occasional meat dish is good if you’re not sure you want to be vegetarian for the rest of your life. I went cold vegetarian three years ago and developed an allergy to animal protein because I ate only a little bit of dairy at the same time. Now I have to stick to a pure vegan diet because all animal products make me ill. So please make sure you still incorporate some animal foods occasionally and keep your tolerance for dairy up!

I’ve heard you have to “ease” back into eating meat if your body hasn’t had it in awhile, but never developing an allergy! Interesting!

Don’t put labels on yourself- eat what makes you feel healthy. It is meat occasionally that is just fine!

Confession- I am trying so hard to not go shopping and save more money!

I think it’s better to go with what your body wants than to pick out a label! I eat vegetarian most of the time, but I am just an eater!! :) A dairy free eater, but an eater!!
hehe

Have a great day!
