Gardein BBQ Pulled Shreds

by Julie @savvyeats on February 14, 2010

Note: I wrote this post at the airport on Friday morning, but was unable to post it until now since Delta lost my gate-checked bag…which had my computer charger in it (Check back later this week for that story).

The people at Gardein were kind enough to send me coupons last week for a few of their new products. I picked up the BBQ Pulled Shreds and one other product, which I will review when I try it

Check out the ingredients list:

There are a lot of ingredients in here, but none of them are scary or unidentifiable! I especially like that they make a point of showing that their soy protein comes from non-GMO sources. They use ‘ancient grains’ in a lot of their products, too, like quinoa and amaranth. You all know how much I love my quinoa!

The nutritional information looks pretty good to me. Lots of protein and iron!

The package suggests you eat the BBQ shreds on a bun, but I didn’t have any on hand. I did, however, have a tiny bit of humamole left, as well as some soon-to-go-stale tortilla chips and some hurry-and-eat-it-so-it-doesn’t-get-wilty-over-the-weekend spinach to use up.
I threw it all together with some mustard greens to create a taco salad of sorts.

In the mix:

  • Gardein BBQ Shreds
  • Humamole
  • Spinach + Mustard Greens
  • Crumbled tortilla chips

I loved the taste and texture of the Gardein ‘meat!’ It was tender and flavorful, and had a very similar texture to meat. The BBQ sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. It was maybe a little more chewy than ‘real’ BBQ shreds would be, but other than that, they were great!

While I usually prefer to get my protein from sources like beans, Greek yogurt, and quinoa, I think Gardein will be perfect for those times I am in the mood for a meat substitute.

In other news, in the spirit of trying new vegetables, this salad was the first time I’d ever tried mustard greens.

Have to say, I was not a fan. At all. They are very peppery and almost spicy; my throat and nose were burning after a few bites! Honestly, I ate around the last few leaves in my salad bowl because I just couldn’t take another bite. I still have most of what I bought at the grocery store to use up, so I’m hoping I like them better cooked! If you have any recipe suggestions for mustard greens, I’d love to see them!

I wrote this post at the airport, and will be taking a blogging/emailing/Tweeting hiatus until Monday. I only have 48 hours with Dan, and I’m going to make the most of them! See you all next week!

Hope you are enjoying your Valentine’s Day with Dan :) Where did you find the Gardein products – I want to try some because they don’t have egg whites like so many fake meat products seem to.

That’s so funny, I was just thinking there really isn’t a way to make veggie pulled pork. This is great, I’ll have to keep an eye out for them. Your salad looks perfect!

Hi Julie,
I don’t know about Ecto, but you can do a quick fix by logging into wordpress – To rotate your pictures go to your Media Library (click Media from the left hand menu), find the picture you want to edit and click on it. When it loads, right underneath the picture will be the option to “edit image” – click on that. Now you’ll have a page with five icons above your image – you want the one second to the left (rotate counter-clockwise). Click it, press save, and voila, you should be set!

By the way – your humamole is totally on my list of things to make in the next month or so. Hope you’re enjoying your weekend with Dan!

I am shocked at how much that looks like actual pork bbq! I am with you on mustard greens – they almost taste bitter to me!
