Give Your Pets a Hug

I was planning on testing four or five recipes yesterday. Instead, Dan and I spent the day cuddling with Max and monitoring his breathing and injuries.

Saturday night, Dan took Max for a walk. They were a few blocks away when somebody opened a front door to go out to her car. A dog bolted out of the house behind her, ran right up to Max and picked him up in his jaws. We think he shook Max for a few seconds before Dan and the girl could free him.

Max seemed fine at first. His right side was tender, but he otherwise seemed to be acting normally. We called an emergency vet, who told us that if he wasn’t bleeding and seemed to be okay, we could monitor overnight and wait until morning to bring him in.

About five minutes later, we noticed that he was, in fact, bleeding from the area around his ribs. We rushed to the Cornell Veterinary Hospital, and they took him to the back to monitor him while we waited for a doctor. When we were able to see the doctor, she informed us that they needed to keep him overnight for surgery to ensure that there were no internal injuries and to head off any possible infections.

Max now has two drains to avoid infection, many stitches, a hard plastic cone on his head, injuries that need to be hot-packed three times a day and a generous supply of antibiotics and pain medications. He needs help getting up or down from the couch and going up stairs.

But his happy demeanor is coming back, and he is full of kisses and cuddles for us. And he has two owners who are very grateful to the Cornell Veterinary Hospital and are thrilled to have him home and safe.

If you have pets, give them all a hug today. They deserve it.

Oh my gosh, so glad he’s ok! Does the person whose dog it was have any responsibility in this case?

Poor little nugget! I’m glad he’s okay and Cujo’s owner had better be dropping some coin to help pay the bills (if not all of them since it IS her dog’s fault!)

Ahhhhhh, that is TERRIBLE! I am so sorry for you all, and I hope that the other dog is kept somewhere very safe. Are the owners helping with expenses?

(I was both our dogs alone alot – I can’t even imagine what I would do!) Please keep us updated as he heals – lots of pupper (and human) love being sent your way from Cleveland!

Poor little guy! I will for sure be giving my cat a little extra love tonight (which for her might mean space; she’s not very into cuddling haha).

By the way, I took your basic risotto recipe and added butternut squash and bacon and it was delicious! I always forget how much I love risotto until I make it :) .

I just found your blog and wanted to say that I’m so sorry this happened to your puppy. Truly a horrible situation. I hope the other dog’s owner is taking responsibility financially, and also putting up a gate or something to prevent this from ever happening again.

I have a puggle and cannot even fathom something like this happening to her. I’ve just about stopped taking her to the dog park after several small incidents where other dogs have snapped at her. There are just too many dogs that are aggressive.

Poor Max, glad he’s doing better. Hate hearing stuff like that…as for hugging animals, I think my Phoebe gets worn out with my daily hugs! lol she just kind of rolls her eye when I go to pick her up and love on her! :)
Hope your little guy continues to improve, am sure he will with you all taking such good care of him. Hugs to all of you.
