Orange White Chocolate Scones

I went a little Savvy Scone-crazy last week. Not only did I make up some Coconut Chai and Apple Cinnamon scones, I also decided to throw in another new flavor.

Orange white chocolate. The subtle tart citrus is balanced by the creamy white chocolate. This has easily become the new favorite flavor for both Dan and I. Try them, won’t you?

Orange White Chocolate Scones

2 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cups turbinado sugar
2 tablespoons baking powder
2 tablespoons ground flax seed
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup canola oil
Zest of 1 medium orange
1/3 cup white chocolate chips
1 teaspoon orange extract
3/4 cup 1% milk

Preheat the oven to 400F and grease a cookie sheet.

In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, flax seed and salt. Stir in the canola oil, orange zest, white chocolate and orange extract.

One quarter cup at a time, add the milk, stirring well after each addition.

Separate the dough into two parts. Pat each into a 1/2″ thick disk on the cookie sheet. Slice each disk into 6 equal parts, moving the pieces away from each other so that the sides will cook evenly.

Bake at 400F for 12-16 minutes, or until the tops are slightly firm and the sides of the scones are no longer doughy. Allow to cool for five minutes, then transfer to a wire cooling rack.

I’m not a huge white chocolate fan, but this recipe looks great. I may try making these with currants instead of the chocolate. I love the combination of currants and orange!

I’ve only had dried currants in a few things, but I enjoyed them then!

Citrus and white chocolate are always a great combination. I’ve never had it with whole wheat flour, though, and am intrigued…

Since it is whole wheat pastry flour (and therefore very fine), I could hardly tell a difference
