Happy 2010, everyone! I hope your year is off to a great start!
On Thursday, December 31, I ran the “Run Into the New Year” 5K on the Wisconsin State Fair grounds, which benefitted childhood cancer research.
I was worried that it would be freezing and icy because, well, we’re in Wisconsin. In the weeks leading up to the race, I kept asking myself, “Wait, why am I doing this? Am I crazy?”
Luckily, it was 23 degrees on Thursday, which is much warmer than I initially expected. I know all you warm climate readers think I’m weird for calling that ‘warm,’ but to put it into perspective, today it is 7 degrees here. 23F on NYE is practically a heat wave!

Despite the “warmth,” I still bundled up quite a bit! On top, I wore a sports bra + long sleeve shirt + this awesome Brooks jacket. On bottom, I wore tights + running skirt. Topped it all off with a hat and gloves!
The race coordinators did a great job of clearing the route of snow and ice, though there were still a few snowy spots. There were quite a few puddles, too, but at least puddles aren’t as slippery!

Dan played photographer while I raced, and had lots of fun playing with the ‘continuous shoot’ setting on the new DSLR. Since it is harder for me to breathe when I run in the cold, I told him I was expecting to finish in about 34 minutes.
I don’t know my official time because they didn’t use electronic chips for timing, but I believe I finished around 32:00. That is two minutes faster than I expected! Woohoo!
We also got some SWEET race swag!

A long-sleeve T-shirt (which is super comfortable, and I love the color!) and a bottle of champagne in honor of the holiday! Since we knew we were going to a party that night, we didn’t open it, and are saving it for a special occasion in the near future.
Anyone else do a NYE/New Year’s race? How’d it go?

Congrats on your race!
In high school we always ran a race at midnight in Central Park. I am a Northeasterner, but waiting for hours until midnight outside in the cold was brutal! I did do an 11 miler in the snow after work on NYE which made for a lovely evening!
great job coming in around 32 minutes!
what a fun race to participate in!
Cutest race outfit ever!!!
That IS some sweet swag! I feel like comfy long-sleeved T-shirts are the best thing ever, but annoyingly hard to come by. And the champagne is just fabulous. Congrats!!
Good for you for doing a race on NYE! I am a total baby and do not exercise outside in the winter.
Don’t worry, I usually stick to indoor workouts when it is cold and icy out. I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it
That’s my kind of race. I need to run more races if I get free champagne!!
