Q. Introduce yourself!
My name is Dorry and I currently live in my hometown of Dallas, Texas. I blog about rethinking hunger and a healthy, happy, balanced lifestyle at Living with Healthy Hunger.
Q. Savvy Eats approaches the concept of healthy living from the standpoint of “Smart Food, Smart Fitness, & Smart Life.” What does ‘savvy living’ mean to you?
To me, “savvy living” means educating yourself in order to make smart decisions for a healthy benefit in all areas of your life. For example, knowing how to fuel and refuel before and after workouts, knowing when your supermarkets have sales or when farmers markets are open in your neighborhood, understanding the nutritional value of meals you prepare at home and how to order for your needs at a restaurant. The list goes on and on.
Smart Food Q. What is your ‘go-to’ meal?
One of my go-to meals is a bowl of spicy lentils on a bed of spinach with a side of hummus and homemade toasted pita chips. Protein from the lentils, nutrient-punch from the spinach, healthy serving of fat from the hummus and carbohydrates from the whole wheat pita. Another would be a Mexican variation with spicy black beans, a salad of chopped spinach, red bell pepper and avocado with blue corn tortilla chips. I love meals in bowls.
Smart Fitness Q. How do you get yourself motivated for a hard workout?
My motivation for a hard workout comes from many places. I love the way I feel after a workout. I love the sense of accomplishment. I love the stress relieving factor during a good workout, be it a run, a yoga class or a challenging hike. Our bodies are capable of so much and a physical challenge is a great way to boost confidence and self-acceptance. That’s enough motivation for me.
Smart Life Q. How did you discover the healthy living blogging community?
I can’t exactly recall how I discovered the healthy living community but it was around the very beginning of this year. My fiance and I had a WordPress travel blog when we lived in Belize and I read a handful of other blogs. One day I came across Kath Eats Real Food and when I witnessed the positive interaction of the healthy living blogger community, I was hooked. In May, I bought my ticket for the Healthy Living Summit and the domain for my new blog on the same day. Attending the Healthy Living Summit solidified the positive interaction of this supportive community.
