Secret Recipe Club: Indian-Spiced Lentils

Secret Recipe Club

This month, my Secret Recipe Club assignment was My Fiance Likes It, So It Must Be Good! The blog title may be a bit of a mouthful, but I love Peggy’s blog. She has some stellar recipes (I had trouble choosing just one!) and recently started culinary school. She has an especially helpful post on the proper way to dice onions, and I look forward to seeing her share more of what she has learned in her classes.

I chose to make her Indian-Spiced Lentils because, as you may recall, I have recently developed a love for lentils.

The recipe was simple to make, and we loved the flavorful lentils over rice. Word to the wise: be careful when adding the garam masala. Mine came out way too fast, and while I managed to scoop a lot of it out before it was too late, it still made the dish especially spicy. The extra rice I made came to our rescue!

Thanks, Peggy! To see more great recipes from this month’s Secret Recipe Club, follow the links below!

Yes, I’ve had that experience of too much pouring out of the spice jar… and it’s usually something like cayenne pepper, isn’t it? Never just a little extra thyme! Welcome to the wonderful world of lentils! One of my favorite places to shop literally has 6 kinds of lentils.

I love lentils too! Of course I only recently learned of their awesomeness. For the longest time I completely ignored them. I gotta try this recipe with the bag I have sitting in my pantry…yum!

I way overcooked them the first few times, so they were mushy and gross. I love them now that I know how to properly cook them!

These lentils look great! I didn’t used to like lentils, but recently I’ve discovered that they are fantastic if prepared with lots of tasty spices! These look wonderful. :)

I love that you chose this dish! It looks great – and trust me, I’ve dumped a whole thing of cayenne pepper in a dish once because the cap wasn’t on tight enough… Good thing I like spicy foods, right?

Anyway, great job again and so glad to discover your blog as well! :)

I love Indian spices….but Grumpy doesn’t. However, it doesn’t stop me from making a treat for me once and a while! I’d be happy to eat your lentils, spice and all! (heat)

Lentils (and other legumes) are a staple at our house because of how much cheaper they are than meat. (Although mu husband only “allows” one vegetarian meal a week – ha!) Do you also love other beans? And do you cook them from dried or use canned ones?

Yes. Lately, I’ve been really into cooking dried beans in the crockpot!

Ah, I gave away my slow cooker when we moved to Hong Kong. But I do miss it a lot. I’ve been using a soaking method where you boil the dry beans for 3 minutes, then drain and soak overnight, then drain and cook. This stops the tummy problems. :)
