The Cabinet

Last week, I told you that we upgraded my spice “basket” to a spice “cabinet.”

The basket just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Spices ended up stacked on top of each other, and things like extracts and food colorings had no chance of fitting in.

As I’ve mentioned before, space is at a premium in our kitchen. I didn’t want to devote any counter space to a big spice rack. It just wasn’t going to happen. So we got a little creative.

We found this random corner cabinet at Significant Elements, an “architectural reuse” store a few blocks away from us. Now, the awkward corner in our kitchen that only held my aprons holds our spice cabinet as well!

Savory spices on the top shelf.

Baking spices on the second.

Cacao nibs and extra spices that I need to get jars for on the third.

And extracts, food colorings, and vanilla bean paste on the bottom.

My kitchen feels so much more organized now!

What creative storage solutions have you come up with?

Spices are one of the most frustrating things to store! I had to relocate mine to a drawer!

i love your spice cabinet! my spice shelf in my pantry needs a makeover. i’m contemplating one of those spinning circle things so that i can see all of the spices, but i’m not entirely committed to that though. it really is a hard thing to keep neat!

this is a great little cabinet.

So – a few weeks ago, I tweeted “All I want for MLK day is a 33 1/4 inch shelf.”
Because I measured this space in my kitchen, which I thought would be perfect for a shelf. And I thought – I should look at wood at some point and just have the hardware store cut me a 33 1/4 piece so i can make a shelf……

THEN – i was cleaning out this old storage room at the office, and we found some old pieces of furniture from our old office building that Jen decided to scrap. My friend/co-worker Bryan remembered that I wanted a shelf, and took one of the pieces of wood (was a piece of countertop in the old building) and cut me three pieces of 33 1/4 by 11 inches so that I can put up a shelf or two or three! HOOOOOOOOOOOORAY.

    other creative storage places?
That yellow pantry type thing in my apartment? It came from Jen’s Dad’s house – it used to be in a nursery to hold baby clothes and linens! I bought a little can of paint from wal-mart – it was in the clearance section bc the can was dented – for like $2, and a brush, and painted it, and added the shelf paper and moved it into the dining area! PRESTO! I also love that I display the lemonade pitcher and cookie jar from her dad on top of it, as well.

I also use a big container that came with lotions and bath salts and such in it to hold all my snack food, energy beans, lara bars, etc. on top of my fridge.

That’s a great idea. When we had our kitchen modeling last year the designer wanted to leave a little space since it wasn’t deep enough due to a pipe in the back of the cabinet but I didn’t want to waste an inch of space and believe me it wasn’t an inch, it was a whole 8 inches so I said just put shelves inside and instead of leaving as a dummy cabinet. It has 3 shelves that are 5 inches deep and holds every spice I have.
