in Smart Life,The Little Things

Too often, we get caught up in our day to day routines and forget to appreciate the little things in life.  In my Little Things series, I like to honor the details that are making me happy today, and ask you to do the same!

The Little Thing making me happy today is…

Looking through the photos of our great visit with my parents this past weekend. A mini wine tour, hot mulled cider, hikes, waterfalls and shopping. I wish they could come visit more often!

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh.

I totally can’t wait to visit you.

And I wish I was there when your parents were.

But at least I’ll get to see you and Dan! :)

Wow, what waterfall is that in the pictures?

I just stumbled across your blog a few days ago when someone posted your pumpkin spice syrup recipe link on Facebook. I was really psyched to see you have some really good canning recipes as I just learned how to can. I see quite a few are from Canning for a New Generation. Do you like that cookbook? Any other recommendations for canning recipe resources? I’m so new to the whole thing that I don’t know what I’m allowed to safely alter. Thanks!

That is Taughannock Falls!

I love Canning for a New Generation. It is my favorite canning cookbook because it has more creative recipes and some great tips. For a basic and broad cookbook, you could look at the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving.

Altering recipes can be tricky, and I only do what I am 100% comfortable with. It helps to understand the science behind canning, which I have blogged about (see the canning page in the right sidebar). Honestly, I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable with tweaking any canning recipe if I didn’t have my food science background. Rule of thumb: if you’re unsure, don’t do it!

Hope that was at least a little helpful!
