The Little Things #9 (and My Running Verdict)

by Julie @savvyeats on March 3, 2010

Sorry to anyone who got a half-finished post by me in their Google Reader! For some unknown reason, Ecto decided that it would be a good idea to publish my rough draft for tomorrow’s post instead of saving it! I deleted it, but some of you may have still gotten it in your reader. Sorry!

Half Marathon Verdict

This morning, I attempted my first run in weeks, since I have been babying my IT band and shin injury. I ran/walked 1.9 miles in about 25:00, and it now feels like someone is stabbing a fork into the side of my knee. Since it still hurts over an hour and a half later, and since I only ran less than 1/6 the distance of the half, I have decided to pull out of the race.

Hearing Kelley talk about her training and experiences with last year’s Princess Half is what initially got me started on running. This race was why I started running in the first place, so as you can imagine, I’m a bit bummed. But I also know that this decision is the best for me in the long run.

My plane ticket is nonrefundable, so I will still be traveling to Orlando on Friday night. I have a fun bloggie lunch date planned for Saturday, will get to cheer on my friends and spend quality time with them, and will soak up a bit of the Floridian warmth, so I’m still excited to go!

Any Floridians want to be spectators at the race with me on Sunday morning? I’d love the company!!

I’m trying to stay positive about the whole thing, so today seems appropriate for…

The Little Things #9!

The little things making me happy today are….

1. I listened to my body and made the difficult, but best, decision for me.

2. I get to escape the Wisconsin cold for a few days of sun and warmth!

3. I will get to have a fun week with friends, all of whom I will be living far away from come June.

4. I am getting married in 88 days, and our wedding invitations arrived today!

5. I tried my first bowl of savory oatmeal this morning. WHY have I never had this before? It is so good! I shouldn’t have been afraid of savory oats!

Before toppings:

  • 1/2 c. oats
  • 1 c. water
  • 1/2 c. frozen corn

With toppings:

  • Black beans
  • Raspberry Chipotle salsa
  • A little bit of sharp cheddar cheese!

6. It is finally starting to feel like spring outside! It is still cold, but you can feel the spring sun coming on!

7. The knee injury gives me an opportunity to get deeper into my yoga and strength training practices.

8. Friday is Savvy Eats’ half birthday, and there are some exciting things scheduled for it!

What little things are making you happy today?

Aww that’s a tough decision but the right one, I think! I shoudl have pulled out of my last half but I didn’t and ended up really hurting myself. I did NOT listen to my body!!

AND YAY! Your wedding is SO soon! These next 88 days will fly. I remember thinking that the last 100 days went by the fastest! This is very exciting!

You are doing the right thing! No need to cause injury or stress out just go and enjoy the sun and cheer everyone on.

your wedding will be here before you know it, that’s so exciting!
I think you did the right thing, although I am sure it was a tough decision. You’ll have a blast in Florida though, enjoy it!

I’m sure it is a tough decision, but you should be SO PROUD of yourself for listening to your body and making a smart decision (rather than a hasty one that you’ll regret later). Pulling out of this race and possibly being able to run a half marathon in the future (or even run AT ALL!) is more important than one weekend.
The best question to ask yourself is whether you are in this for the long haul– if you’re in it (healthy eating, exercising, etc) for the long haul, than this one race is just a little stepping stone.
That said, I’m sure it’s still hard, but you have a GREAT attitude! I love your list of happy things!
And congrats on the wedding invites!! Do you guys have to put yours together? We just had the main invite, tissue paper, the RSVP card and RSVP envelope, but it still took time to put it all together. How exciting!!!

Thank you! I love this part: “The best question to ask yourself is whether you are in this for the long haul– if you’re in it (healthy eating, exercising, etc) for the long haul, than this one race is just a little stepping stone.
That said, I’m sure it’s still hard, but you have a GREAT attitude! I love your list of happy things!”

Our invites are just the main invite and the envelope (RSVPs are online/via phone), so it shouldn’t be too bad!

Sorry that you are in so much pain! It’s great that you made the decision that is right for your body, you don’t want to do any further damage. Enjoy Florida, I will be jealous of the nice weather!

I’m so sorry to hear about your IT band. It’s really discouraging when you work really hard but can’t see the fruits of you labor… I think you have the right mindset though!!! Yay for yoga, weddings, and listening to your body. :-D

Sorry about the half marathon pull out. I hope your knee starts feeling better by now though. Are you going to need to set up another doctor’s appointment?

I am thankful for my cat pawing at meowing at the door when I come home, and for DVR so I can watch the Biggest Loser in 1 hour instead of 2 ;)

Sorry to hear about pulling out of the race, but that’s nice of you to go and cheer everyone on! Hope it’s warm down there for you – high of 60 today. I’m heading to West Palm tomorrow. Anything is better than Michigan at this point. I am thankful for an awesome spinning class this morning and for Susan giving me the “Creative Writer” award :)

Good for you for listening to your body! I had to pull out of my entire cross country season my senior year due to stress fractures. I was also the captain of the team. It was horrible, but I can only imagine what would have happened to my body if I kept running.

I had a massage today, and I am pretty happy about that! I am glad you are still going to FL. Whenever I am injured and want to push it, I remember the advice of several friends who are physical therapists. They seen tons of older runners who are destroyed now because they didn’t listen to their bodies when they were young!

I’m sorry to hear that you had to pull out of the race :( The most important thing is to get healed. Heading to the Florida warmth should be great, though! :)

I love savory oats with egg and cheese on top – yum! Yours looks delicious!

So sorry to hear that you have to pull out, but I think you made the right decision! Just think of it as not being able to run this little race but being able to run in the future!

It sounds like you have made the best decision on the race, and it’s great that you will still go and cheer on the others! And YES it will be lovely to get out of the frozen tundra, won’t it?
The savory oats look fantastic – I need to try those soon! I love all things Southwestern / Mexican, and the salsa topping especially has me interested.
Oh, and I love your wedding invitation photograph! How unique and sophisticated!

I’m so sorry you had to pull out of the race! I think it will be a great move for you in the long run too. And I’m psyched you’ll still be coming to Orlando!

Savory oats with corn – that’s a great idea. I love my normal oats so much I haven’t gone for savory oats yet, and haven’t seen a combo out there yet that really piqued my interest – but yours looks very promising. I might be trying that soon. Thanks!

I LOVE the little things concept! It’s one of my new years’ resolutions to really take in every moment and find the little things to make me smile, even on the worst of days. It totally works too! And PS. I tried savory oats recently and LOVED It. SO GOOD! Where have they been all my life? ;)
