The Weird Sisters

Weird

I was thrilled to be chosen to review Eleanor Brown’s new book, The Weird Sisters, for BlogHer Book Club.

I’m on a roll with the BlogHer Book Club!  First, 5 stars to The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards. Next, The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown…another 5 star book.

The Weird Sisters focuses on a family living in a small college town in Ohio. The father is a Shakespeare scholar, and often speaks in lines from ‘The Bard’s’ plays.  All three daughters are named after Shakespeare characters: Rosalind, Bianca and Cordelia (Rose, Bean and Cordy).  The sisters have been living apart for years, one remaining in Ohio, one in New York City and one traveling the country.  They are all brought back to their parents’ home under the guise of helping care for their mother, who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer, but they all secretly have their own struggles and problems they are trying to escape by coming home.

It took me a chapter or two to get past the voice of the story– essentially all three sisters combine to form a single omniscient narrator — but once I did, I couldn’t stop reading.  I had to set a timer during my mid-afternoon reading breaks to keep myself from reading for the rest of the afternoon instead of working.  I can’t recommend this book enough.

Final Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.  See more of my book reviews here.

    dear Julie -

I have a stack of books for you to look through and take what you’d like to borrow the next time we are in the same place.

perhaps you could consider this one in a similiar pile as my own?

p.s. finally reading Water for Elephants. You know, that book you got me for my birthday over 9 months ago? ;) It is fabulous as expected!
