Time to Grow!

Happy Tuesday, friends! I hope you all had a happy, relaxing weekend.

If you follow me on Twitter, you know that we spent 7 hours in our new garden on Saturday and a few hours working on it Sunday.

Yes, I said SEVEN. Ever since we found out we would have garden space in the yard right outside the house our apartment is in, I’ve been dreaming up a big vegetable and herb garden.

We got right down to planting on Saturday! Since it is a little later in the gardening season, most of our plants are seedlings from the co-op and garden store, rather than starting from seeds. I’m actually really excited about where we got our plants, though, because 95% of our seedlings were grown at a local farm from seeds from last year’s crop. And most of them were organic seeds!

The space before (most of what is already planted + the greenhouse belong to our neighbors!)

and after

We planted:

  • Peppers (Sweet, bell, and ancho varieties)
  • Tomatoes (Cherry and sungold varieties)
  • Basil (Genovese and Thai varieties)
  • Cucumbers (2 varieties)
  • Cilantro
  • Oregano
  • Sunflowers
  • Mint (Chocolate and Apple varieties)
  • Sage
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Lettuce
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Lima beans
  • Green beans
  • Peas
  • Carrots
  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
  • Zucchini
  • Yellow summer squash
  • A few kinds of edible flowers (excited to experiment!)
  • Bush beans

And…you can see why we were out there all day! I think we’ll have plenty to share, too, so if anyone comes to visit this summer, I will send you home with some local, organic produce grown with love by me! How’s that for incentive? ;)

We still aren’t quite done. I’m digging up another bed to plant some more beans and peas… I started this morning and dug up the area where the red circle is. That little patch took me a good hour to clean up, so I think making this bed will be a weeklong project!

Later this week, we’ll also be turning over a long strip of soil with the neighbors for winter squash. I have seeds for butternut, buttercup, delicata, acorn and spaghetti squash, as well as pumpkins!

I’m still new to gardening and have a lot to learn , so over the summer I plan to write a Savvy Garden series…I’ll cover tips for particular plants, ways to grow your garden organically, and growing in small spaces (We have a lot of yard space, but I’m also experimenting with growing spinach, beans, etc in pots). If there is anything else you want to see covered, please let me know!

Time to do some more unpacking! We finally found some bookshelves that satisfy both our style and cost requirements, so I can now unpack all my boxes of books. :)

That’s an awesome garden! You have plenty of space! I live in a shoebox with no yard to speak of! Enjoy gardening! Maybe I’ll get to see it someday :) since we’re so close and all!

I’m jealous also… this looks like the makings of a fabulous garden with yummy results!

Our weather has been too cold to start my garden… I am patiently waiting, and I think I’ll go with starts also, as it is so late. I’m a newbie to gardening – last year was my first – but I love it so!

Such an impressive list Julie!
I just planted my “garden” of pots this weekend, so fun, but looking forward to learning more about it!
