The Little Things #62: Anticipation

When it comes to building anticipation for holiday gifts, Dan is a pro.  I do my best to keep up, wrapping his gifts in deceptively-sized boxes and keeping “surprise” presents hidden until opening time. But that is nothing compared to Dan’s tricks. Take this gift, for example:

Peppermint

It looks like a giant peppermint on the outside.  But inside…

Peppermint 2

which finally got me to my new tea timer.

Or this one, which simply looked like a big box.  Little did I know that the gift in the box was actually one for Dan from his mom.  Under the wrapping paper, taped to the box, I found this:

NYWCC

Dan gave me some wonderful gifts.  But they are especially awesome for how much Dan teased me about them for the last few weeks.  In all my wondering about the giant peppermint, I would never have guessed that it was a tea timer.  It is a simple gift, made so much better by the anticipation. And I saw the Signals box arrive, and thought for ages that it was the gift.  Silly me, assuming things would be so straightforward!

So here’s to anticipation for exciting things to come.

What little things are you appreciating today?  And anybody have any good present trickery I can use on Dan next year?

A Thanksgiving Count-Down Calendar

Little Things Calendar 2

By now, it has become a Thanksgiving tradition to really celebrate the little things in life in the the weeks leading up to Turkey Day.  In 2010, I kept it simple: slips of paper in a jar.  In 2011, I took it up a notch and we wrote what we were thankful for on little paper leaves for our “tree.”  Both times, we took some time each day to write down that day’s “Little Thing.”

This year, we’re doing things in reverse, with a Thanksgiving “advent” calendar.  I’ve thought ahead and written out 2 dozen little things we are regularly thankful for, and nestled them in little paper pockets. Starting on Tuesday of this week (24 days before Thanksgiving), we pull out one each day and find a way to celebrate that little thing.

We’ll read for 10 extra minutes on Books day. Give the puppy an extra cuddle on Max day.  Open a jar of jam or applesauce of sliced peaches on Canning day.
